“Memories from 2009″…
We were in Kintamani on the island of Bali in Indonesia. It was a sleepless night as our neighbours were yelling as well as partying up until midnight. Ok, so midnight isn’t really all that late as well as we would have joined them if we didn’t have to be up in 3 hours to climb a volcano! Nick really had to go as well as ask them to be quiet, which seemed quite lame as they were about the exact same age as us.
Beautiful views of install Batur as well as Lake Batur in the Kintamani area, Bali, Indonesia.
After a restless 3 hours of sleep there was a banging at our guesthouse door. It was our guide as well as it was time to put on our hiking shoes. It seemed insane to get up after such bit sleep as well as begin doing physical exercise, however that’s why we had come to Kintamani, to climb the 1700m high install Batur Volcano as well as watch a gorgeous sunrise.

Trying to keep warm in the hut at the top of the volcano in Kintamani, Bali.
The walk was mainly flat for the very first hour to get to the base of the volcano. when we started to climb, the scenery altered from forest as well as huge rocks to sand as well as slippery gravel. We hiked at a steep incline for about 1 as well as a half hours, no zigging as well as zagging, just directly up. We were exhausted, we were chilly as well as we had to pause numerous times since we felt sick (due to lack of sleep as well as lack of food in our stomachs) however when we reached the top, it made the hike up there all worthwhile.
We made it!
There was one bit hut at the top with a terminate for keeping warm as well as we graciously accepted some freshly brewed tea. Our guide called us over to the side of the volcano to show us something. The volcano was so hot, heavy steam was coming out of the mountain. He dug a bit hole, buried a few eggs as well as within 5 minutes, breakfast of hard-boiled eggs was ready!
We made it to the top just in time to have some food, tea as well as witness the orange-red glow peer over the neighbouring mountains as well as Lombok Island. It was rather the sight as well as definitely made getting up at 3:00am well worth it. When the sun was virtually all the method up, our neighbours arrived…hungover as well as late. They should’ve listened to Nick as well as gone to bed when he told them to!
The stunning sunrise. Kintamani, Bali.
We brought on hiking around the primary volcano rim as well as the lower volcano rim as well. This volcano had erupted in the 1920’s, ’60s as well as ’90s as well as we might even see the aftermath of the previous eruptions – black, hardened lava covered the ground. luckily for us, the beast didn’t feel like exploding while we were up there.

King Of The World! notice the black hardened lava from previous eruptions.
We enjoyed the stunning views of the Lake Batur down below, Bali’s largest crater lake, as well as of Lombok Island in the distance. In total, it was a 6 hour hike as well as we made it back down to our guesthouse in time for our free breakfast as well as promptly passed out. We were well deserving of a nap.
Conquered! view from the bottom of the volcano. Kintamani, Bali, Indonesia.
A trip to Bali wouldn’t be total without coming to the Kintamani area. The lake, volcano, rice paddies, temples as well as gorgeous views of the valley are stunning. We suggest renting a vehicle in Kuta or Ubud as well as checking out the region independently. There are many little villages as well as locations off the beaten path waiting to be discovered.
